Most of the hull is buried in sand with the brass conning tower broken off the pressure hull and laying off the starboard side. Further forward the hull ends in a clean break. 10m away from the break is the bow section.
The wreck of HMS E 49 is classed as one of the best dives in Shetland. E39 is a Protected Site where it can be dived but must not be touched.

He transferred to HMS GANGES on 13th May 1916 until 19th October 1916, rising to Boy Telegraphist on 3rd July 1916. He was next attached to HMS VICTORY I for 2 weeks before being posted to HMS DOLPHIN on 9th November 1916 until 21st December 1916. His final posting was to E49 (tendered to HMS LUCIA) on 22nd December 1916, losing his life on 12th March 1917. He was just 16 years old when he died.
He was recorded as being 5’3” tall with dark brown hair and brown eyes.

As mentioned above with the 1911 census, Basil was married to Lucy Evaline Binley (nee Raven) but their history was just as tragic as Basil’s death.
Lucy married George Binley, a tailor, on 10th September 1902 in Birmingham. Lucy did not have her occupation entered onto her marriage certificate but she was a music hall artiste also and had the stage name of Betty Barclay (see images below). They had a daughter Ivy the year after, on 16th July 1903, and for a few years all was well in their marriage. Lucy gave birth to another daughter, Joyce Binley on 12th July 1908 but George declared that the child was not his and instead petitioned on divorce papers that the daughter was Basil Beal’s and Lucy Binsley’s.
He petitioned for the divorce on 25th September 1909, citing the adultery between Basil and Lucy from dates in November 1907 which continued into 1908, something which both parties denied. A Decree Nisi was issued for the divorce on 13th May 1910 with damages of £350 to be paid by Basil to George and a further £150 paid to George for the maintenance of Ivy. Ivy was also to remain with her father. The Decree Absolute was granted on 21st November 1910 and the marriage between George and Lucy was dissolved. Shortly after the Absolute was granted Lucy and Basil married (at the end of 1910).
They remained together until Basil’s tragic death - Lucy was awarded his pension and Star, Victory and British war medals and after mourning his loss for several years she remarried in 1922 to George Glover who was her partner in the act- Betty Barclay and a Baritone (HERE) . Tragedy was to strike one last time when Lucy died just 3 years later on 18th July 1925, a patient of Colney Hatch Mental Hospital (see HERE for more details on the history of the institution). The residue of her estate was left to Stewart Beal, Schoolmaster - brother of Basil.
If there was any confusion as to if Joyce was Basil's daughter, even though she was recorded with the Binsley surname on the 1911 census, she had changed her surname to Beal by 1939.

Name - Lt. Reay Parkinson
DOB - 15th February 1893
Place of Birth - Edinburgh, Scotland
Parents - Thomas Parkinson and Euphemia Pillman
Rank - Lieutenant
Service History -
Reay entered Naval service on 15th January 1906 as a Midshipman, passing out on 15th September 1910 - not much is known of Reay’s early life before 1911 when he was listed in the census as a Midshipman, aged 18 aboard the battleship HMS EXMOUTH which was anchored in Malta. He rose to Acting Sub Lt on 15th January 1913, Sub Lieutenant on 15th January 1914
and awarded the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 15th November 1915. His other vessels also whilst a Midshipman included HMS ABOUKIR, HAMPSHIRE, DEFENCE and ZEALANDIA.
He served on HMS MINOTAUR from 16/10/1913 until 15/01/1914 and transferred to HMS AMETHYST on 18/01/1915 until 30/11/1915. It was during his service aboard the cruiser that certain actions from Reay prompted his commanding officer to accelerate his application for promotion in August 1915. This was refused, but he rose to Lieutenant later the same year (Amethyst logs HERE)
It was also during this service that he applied and was accepted to serve aboard submarines in February 1915. Once he left AMETHYST he embarked to join the submarine depot ship HMS DOLPHIN at the end of December 1915, transferring to HMS FORTH (also for subs) on 12th January 1916. Reay joined the submarine HMS W-2. Four W-Class submarines had been built and all of these were given over to the Italian Navy. Reay was commanded to escort the four W-Class submarines from Britain to Italy. These were formally handed over to the Italian Navy in August 1916 - he was able to speak both French and Italian and it was possible that these factors later earned him an Order of Crown of Italy Cavalier in recognition of his services during the transfer of the subs to Italy.
1916 was a busy year for the young officer - on the 14th June 1916 he married Maud Lyle Hooper at Holy Trinity Church in Brompton, London. In August 1916 he was transferred to HMS LUCIA and on 3rd November 1916 joined E49.
Reay probably knew via letter from Maud that he was to become a father in the summer of 1917. Tragically he was never to meet his baby son when he was born on 12th August 1917 in Bishop’s Stortford. Maud had baby Reay baptised on 19th September 1917, at the same church they were married in and she raised him alone for a while.
She was awarded his pension and claimed his Star, Victory and British medals following his death. She herself was awarded a 1914-1915 Star as she served as a Nurse with the Voluntary Aid Detachment unit of the British Red Cross Society.
Maud married again on 21st April 1919 to a Captain in the RAF, Edward Noel Griffith, who himself was a widower. Reay Jnr followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy for a lifetime of service. He served in the Second World War, gaining the Distinguished Service Cross and became Commander on 31st December 1951. He died in 1979.
