Monuments & Memorials

The three obelisks, one at Plymouth, Portsmouth and Chatham were to represent and commemorate members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave.

PLYMOUTH MEMORIAL

The Plymouth Memorial was unveiled on 29th July 1924 by HRH Prince George and designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. A total of 23,225 are listed on the Devon memorial.

PORTSMOUTH MEMORIAL

The Portsmouth Naval Memorial was unveiled by the Duke of York (the future George VI) on 15 October 1924. It lists the names of 24,660 casualties.

CHATHAM MEMORIAL

The first of the Memorials to be unveiled, the Chatham Naval Memorial was unveiled by the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) on 26 April 1924.
