On the 17th November 1914, a seaman was accidentally knocked overboard from the SS Peshawar at Scapa Flow, Orkney, it being nearly dark at the time. Dodds and David Sutherland both went after him and supported him until a boat reached them.

BRITISH MEDAL FOR A NORWEGIAN SAILOR WHO RESCUED MAN AT KIRKWALL. The King has, on the recommendation of the President of the Board of Trade, awarded the silver medal for gallantry in saving life at sea to Mr A. Wold Hansen, chief mate of the Norwegian steamship Catherine Cuneo, of Tonsberg, in recognition of his services in rescuing a deck hand of H.M. drifter Daisy, who fell overboard in the anchorage at Kirkwall on January 13 last.

CARNEGIE HERO The monthly meeting of the Carnegie Hero Fund Trustees was held at Dunfermline on Thursday. Dr Ross, the Chairman, presiding. The following was among the awards :— A. Wold Hansen, chief mate of the Norwegian steamship Catherine Cuneo of Tonsberg, on 13th January, 1915, rescued a man from drowning in the sea off Kirkwall. It was extremely cold and dark at the time, and the drowning man, who had fallen between two vessels, was only rescued with considerable difficulty. For his action, on the occasion Hansen received a silver medal from the King, while the Trustees have awarded him an honorary certificate and the sum of £l0.

HUMANE SOCIETY'S AWARDS ABERDEEN AND ROSEHEARTY MEN HONOURED. The Committee the Royal Humane Society last night issued its completed list of awards in 180 cases under investigation during the present month, which includes the following: Bronze medal George Whitmore, stoker, H.M.S. Polmont for his gallantry in plunging overboard at Longhope, Orkney, on 3rd August and saving a man who, in a sudden fit insanity, threw himself from the ship. Whitmore incurred great risk, the night being pitch dark, but he stuck to his man till a boat reached them.

BRAVERY KIRKWALL. MEDAL FOR DECKHAND ON H.M. DRIFTER. The committee of the Royal Humane Society held its monthly meeting in London on Friday, under the presidency of Admiral Sir G. D. Morant, when the following award was made:- Bronze medal to Louis Summers, deckhand on one of H.M. drifters, for his gallantry in plunging into Kirkwall Bay February 16,in an attempt to save a man who had thrown himself from a steamer. The man was exceedingly violent, and beat Summers off. The latter then returned to the drifter, from which a boat was got out and the man, in spite of his struggles, was picked up.

On the 16th February 1916, a man while being transferred from a steamer to a drifter in Kirkwall Bay jumped overboard, the sea being choppy with a strong tide. Summers, on the drifter, jumped in and caught him, but was beaten off by the man and returned on board, the man being picked up by a boat.

At 8 a.m. on the 9th March, 1917, a boat with five men on board was capsized in Widewell Bay, Orkney, the depth being 10 fathoms and the weather very cold. Lieutenant A. Watchlin, R.N.R., got three of the men on the upturned boat and supported the fourth, who was unconscious, till they were picked up.

HENDON POLICE OFFICER HONOURED. SAVING LIFE AT SEA At the monthly meeting of the committee the Royal Humane Society, the Society’s medal was awarded to a number of persons for distinguished gallantry in saving or attempting save life. Among them was Gunner H.C. Butcher, R.M.A. (sergeant attached to Hendon Police Station), who joined up at the outbreak of war. He received the bronze medal for saving the Life of a comrade, who was thrown into the sea in Hoxa Sound, Orkney Islands, January Ist 1918. Gunner Butcher has been home on leave, but left Hendon yesterday for his naval duties.
