U 92 was built by Kaiserliche Werft yard in Danzig and commissioned in December 1917. U 93 served with the III Flotilla and carried out four patrols and was lost on the fifth. In four patrols U 92 recorded 5 merchant ships sunk (15,961 GRT)
2 ships damaged (7,373 GRT)
.
U 92 left for patrol on the 4th September 1918. It was long assumed that U 92 had been lost in the Northern Barrage minefield, outbound, on or around 9th September 1918. The commander was Kptlt. Günther Ehrlich.
In 2006 a survey by the Marine Coastguard Agency on the tug MV Anglian Monarch located two targets that resembled possible submarines. Michael Lowrey and Kevin Heath plotted the positions on the historic mine-map and both wrecks were within Area 'B' of the barrage.
It was also clear that being on the southern side of the barrage, laid on 7th September 1918, this one was a outbound bound vessel. By process of elimination, by dimensions, and as the other U boat to the NW had been positively identified as U 102 then this wreck had to be U 92.
This was confirmed by Steven Slater of the dive group ''Darkstar'' who dived the wreck in 2007 off the dive boat M.V Jean Elaine skippered by Andy Cuthbertson.
