The Loss
The SS Ada, was part of a convoy, and sailing from from Göteborg to Hull with general cargo,, When 15 miles east of Fair Isle SS Ada, and another steamship SS Dana were hit by torpedoes. The SS Ada was rocked by a massive explosion and sank almost immediately .
The torpedo had been fired by the German submarine U-61 (Victor Dieckmann).
3 of the crew were killed.

Approached very close to the right convoy line with the opposite course, then turned hard to the stern double shot on the third steamer, which I recognized as the largest, the averted side (Port line of the convoy) because for the inner side distance is still too small.
Hit in front after a run of 630m. Steamer looked considerably shabby . all steamers had neutral insignia. Estimated size of this steamer between 3000 and 4000 tons. Three or even four masts.....................................
After all ships disappeared from view,. surfaced, Went to the wreck site of the first steamer. Tried in vain to determine name. All painted white and red, even in the drifting boats no safe stop.
The one completely new boat is at Jørgensen and Sik in Grünstadt Norway built then apparently sent to Goteberg. Found drifting debris, cargo paper in packing rolls.
Because of the two strong detonations, perhaps also explosives.

The Wreck
The UKHO have no wreck card for SS Ada and to date the wreck has not been found or identified.
Lloyds War Losses , The First World War puts the sinking as 20 miles east of Aberdeen but the KTB of U 61 clearly shows both SS Ada and SS Dana torpedoed at the same time and position given is off Fair isle. if the U boat chart is overlaid on a modern chart then it plots both SS Dana and SS Ada north east of Fair isle.
There is an unknown wreck 11 miles north east of Fair Isle that could possibly be SS Ada. this wreck has the UKHO wreck card 553.
The wreck is in two parts. both parts combined gives a vessel of 90m in length. The wreck was found in 1994 in position 59°41,419'N 01°18,575'W.
