UC 40 laid a minefield from 60° 06.3'N, 1° 08.5'W to 60° 06.6'N, 1° 06.8'W.
In the KTB UC 40 reported hearing the detonation on October 21st 1917 which would be the SS Anglo Dane striking the mine.

SS Anglo Dane was on a voyage from South Shields to Helsingor.
On 21st October 1917 SS Anglo Dane struck a mine, laid by UC-40, off the Kirkabister Light and broke in two, The vessel sank with the loss of one crew member.

The Wreck
UKHO created a wreck card 41 for this wreck. The wreck was surveyed in 1985 in position 60 06.502N 001 07.566W. Locally this wreck was thought to be the SS Parkmill but was identified by Bob Baird & Fiona Watson as SS Anglo Dane due to the DFDS pottery found on the wreck.

GREEN GLASS BEER BOTTLES IN CORNER OF HOLD. WINCH IN PLACE. BOILER DISLODGED SLIGHTLY AS RESULT OF EXPLOSION. BOWS COMPLETELY GONE FORWARD OF BOILER & LIE CLOSE BY IN 68MTRS. CROCKERY RECOVERED BEARING DFDS CREST. SEABED SAND. (SHIPWRECKS OF N SCOTLAND, BAIRD PUB. 2003 & K HEATH, TELECON 8.10.07) NCA.
A survey of the wreck with side scan sonar in 2018 clearly shows the bow missing. Another contact, most likely the bow was found 100m south of main wrecksite.
