NAVAL FUNERAL IN ABERDEEN. THE CYCLING FATALITY.
The funeral took place yesterday in Aberdeen of Mr Frederick Russell, late engineer of H.M.S. Porcupine, one of the fleet of torpedo destroyers which recently visited the port, who died in Aberdeen Infirmary Saturday last as the result of a cycling accident. The deceased gentleman was buried with full naval honours, the obsequies being attended by the officers and men of Swordfish, Porcupine, and Sturgeon of the torpedo flotilla, the officers and men of H.M.S. Redwing, at present lying in Aberdeen Harbour, and the officers and men of H.M.S. Clyde. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and was preceded by a firing party from the Porcupine, who fired three volleys over the grave.

NAVAL AND MILITARY FUNERAL IN ABERDEEN
There are few more impressive or solemn spectacles to be witnessed than a funeral with naval and military honours, and a considerable amount of public interest was aroused yesterday when the remains of the unfortunate carpenter's mate, James William Horne, of H.M.S. Clyde, Aberdeen, who met his death on Saturday night under particularly sad circumstances, were laid to rest in St Peter's Cemetery. The deceased's home being at Southsea, the funeral took place from the city police mortuary, a short service being conducted in the muster-room by Rev. Arthur Hoyle. For some time before the funeral the streets in the vicinity were crowded with a sympathetic public, and especially at the end of Lodge Walk the throng was very dense, while all along King Street -- the route to the cemetery -- the pavements were lined with people. A couple of gun carriages were requisitioned, one bearing the coffin wrapped in a Union Jack, and the other conveying a large number of wreaths and floral emblems to be placed upon the grave.
The cortege was formed, and to the mournful strains of "The Land o' the Leal," played by the pipers and drummers of the 3rd Gordon Highlanders and 2nd Scottish Rifles, the last journey was commenced. Slowly the procession emerged from the narrow confines of Lodge Walk, headed by a firing party from H.M.S. Harriet, carrying their muskets reversed, and followed by the pipers and drummers. Immediately behind came the gun carriage, drawn by a detachment of men from H.M.S. Speedwell with the pall-bearers, a party of eight petty officers ranged on either side, with the crew of H.M.S. Clyde immediately behind in the place of chief mourners. After these came a body of 60men representing the Royal Naval Reserve, followed by a body of non-commissioned and petty officers from various naval ships at present in port, while the rear was brought up by a number of representatives from the coastguard stations. Among the officers who attended were Commander Ian R. Grant, H.M.S. Clyde; Lieutenant J. D. Copper, H.M.S. Clyde; Fleet Paymaster F. W. Pritchard; Sub-Lieutenant McLeod, R.N.R.; Midshipmen Collie and Whyte, R.N.R., etc.
As the cortege wended its way along the busy thoroughfare, presenting a spectacle picturesque but solemn, there were many manifestations of sympathy and respect on the part of the crowd. Traffic was drawn to one side to allow the procession to pass unhindered. Immediately behind the gun carriage was a cab conveying the deceased's widow. While passing King Street barracks, the pipers played the "Flowers of the Forest," and the guard on duty at the barrack entrance paid a pretty tribute to the deceased naval brother, lining up and standing at the salute while the coffin was borne past. At the cemetery gate in Merkland Road, there was a great concourse of people, but, the public being excluded, they had to watch the ceremony at the grave-side from a distance. A short way from the grave the coffin was hoisted to the shoulders of eight brawny tars, and deposited in its last resting place. After a short but impressive service, conducted by Rev. Arthur Hoyle, the firing party were drawn up, and three volleys were fired over the grave, and after each volley "The Point of War" was played by the pipers, those assembled in the immediate vicinity of the grave standing with bowed and uncovered heads. The sounding of the "last post" by a naval bugler was the signal that the last rites had been performed, and after a farewell glance at the coffin the mourners dispersed.

Aberdeen. took place in Aberdeen yesterday, with full naval honours. A Requiem Mass was Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, and from that place a procession was formed to accompany the remains Nellfield Cemetery. The coffin, covered with beautiful wreaths was placed on a gun carriage, and was drawn by a dozen men from H.M.S. Clyde. Marching in front were five pipers and four drummers of the 3rd Gordon Highlanders, under the leadership of Pipe-Major Dunbar. The pipers played "The Flowers of the Forest" as they marched along Huntly Street and Union Street. Behind the gun carriage came a company of about fifty of the naval men from H.M.S. Clyde, under the command of Lieutenant Capper, R.N. There was also company of Gordon Highlanders from King Street Barracks. Following these came a large company of deceased's friends. At the graveside Rev. J. C. Meany, administrator of St. Mary' Cathedral, conducted the service. When the coffin had been lowered, the pipe and drum band played "The Point of War," and then one the Clyde buglers sounded "The Last Post" before the grave was closed over one who was well known and liked by his comrades

Seaman Found Drowned at Aberdeen . —The body of a seaman, apparently about 35 years of age, was found in the Dee at Aberdeen yesterday , and the jacket pocket had a letter with the address of Mr W . Robertson , Isle View , India Street , Inverness . This was also the name given by the man when he obtained a 1 ticket for a bed at the Aberdeen Sailors Home on 26th August . How the man came to be in the water is unknown ,, and the body lies for identification in the city mortuary.

Robertson, Isle View, India Street, Inverness." There was also a ticket of the Aberdeen Sailors Home showing that the deceased had slept there the night of 26th August. How the man came to be in the water is not known.

Aberdeen Seaman's Death. A verdict of death from exposure, following immersion, was returned at an inquest held Immingham yesterday upon John Fowler, Aberdeen, chief mate of a vessel which foundered in the North Sea Sunday, following an explosion. After the explosion Fowler was found afloat dinging to some wreckage, but died from shock and exposure shortly after being picked up. The rest of the ship's crew were rescued by a naval vessel.

Petty Officer John Baxter, Aberdeen.
Petty Officer John Baxter, second son of the late Mr. George Baxter, foreman pattern-maker, Hall, Russell and Co., died on board one H.M. ships on February 7. Petty Officer Baxter was 34 years of, age. He joined the Navy about 16 years ago. He is a brother of Mrs. Sang, 60 Loanhead Terrace, Aberdeen. An elder brother is also serving in the Navy.

Trimmer Robert Martin, R.N.R., son of and Mrs Martin. 21 Aberdeen, has been accidentally drowned. Trimmer Martin was the possessor of the D.S.M., which gained for gallantry during the German raid on the Yorkshire coast in December, 1914. Before the war be was employed at Ferryhill Foundry. His wife resides at 88 Summer Street.
