The Acacia Class Sloop HMS Dahlia was built by Barclay Curle & Company, Whiteinch, Glasgow and launched on 21st April 1915
Damage to Ship
HMS Dahlia was sweeping in the Moray firth minefield on 4th September 1915 when a mine was struck. The damage was reported as slight but five crew were killed as a result of the explosion.

The Admiralty have notified Mrs. Gower, Brook Road, The Shrubbery. Bromsgrove, that her son, Ordinary Signalman William Gower. R.N.V.R., has been killed by an explosion on the ship in which he was serving. Mrs. Gower has two other sons serving.

Dahlia minesweeper will communicate with the editor of this paper she can have the Bible which she presented her son his 20th birthday, and also letter from messmate on board the Dahlia, who forwards it.

DEATH OF A PONTYPRIDD POSTMAN. It is our painful duty, as a staff, to record the sudden death of our colleague, Mr. W. Gower, postman. The sad fatality happened through an explosion, which occurred on board H.M.S. "Dahlia.' Mr. Gower is a native of Bromsgrove, Worcester, but was stationed at Hereford prior to his advent to Pontypridd, to take up the duties of an established postman. He enlisted in the navy shortly after the outbreak of war and after a course of training at Bristol and the Crystal Palace joined himself to H.M.S. "Dahlia," a mine sweeper. Although he had only been amongst us for a short time Billy, by virtue of his genial disposition, had endeared himself to the whole of the staff. To his sorrowing family we tender our sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement.
