The Loss
Information from HD 2628/1919
At 16.30 on the 29th October 1919 the tug St. Fergus left Lerwick Harbour to sail south with two lighters in tow. The wind was force 4 with a moderate ESE swell.
At 18.50 when 13.33 miles south of Lerwick Harbour one of the lighters foundered and this, in turn, caused the other Lighter to sink.
An enquiry found that: -
The loss was probably caused by one of the three following circumstances, or a combination of them: -
(a) Excessive speed
(b) Absence of ballast
(c) Weight of towing hawser being to great for small lighters (It is not known what the barges were like)
