H.M.S. Opal was an ''M'' class Destroyer built by William Doxford & Sons shipyard in Sunderland and was launched in September 1915.

History
H.M.S. Opal joined the 12th Destroyer Flotilla, based at Scapa Flow and saw action at the Battle of Jutland and supported the Grand Fleet.

BIGGEST STAR TURN THE WAR Stoker Rea, 83, Rawlings Road, Bearwood, who was on H.M.S. Opal during the great naval fight, writes: — '' It was the biggest star turn of the war, an immense number units taking part. I had the good fortune be able to witness practically the whole, a chance you are unable to get in the larger Craft. Upon getting into the firing zone my first thought was that we had entered 'Hades,' and few minutes later 'Hell' itself — a proper inferno. All the battle cruisers knocked spots off one another. Several fell to the rear. The mosquito squadron's chance came with the dusk and finished up few hours later with some No. 1 size bangs ‘which only tin fish can make.’ At daybreak things quietened down, and the Hun ships limped back to their old haunts, ‘numbers reduced.' Some of their more unfortunate boats gave a fine display, proper ‘ double number flash and bang,’ and covered with screen while they, in doing the disappearing trick to the great delight of all. Once twice thought we had the same chance as the celluloid dog that chased the asbestos cat too near the fire, but never got dig at all.” Stoker Rea was in the Falkland Islands battle on H.M.S. Bristol. Another brother is on H.M.S. Tiger, which destroyed the Blucher, and third brother has just recovered from gas poisoning in France.
H.M.S. Opal's main duties were convoy protection and anti-submarine patrols in the North Sea.
On 24 July 1917, H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Mounsey were escorting an east-bound convoy on the Scandinavian (Lerwick–Norway) route
The convoy came under attack by the German submarine U-67,(Kptlt. Hans Nieland) which sank the Swedish collier S.S. Viking. H.M.S. Opal followed the track of the torpedoes and dropped depth charges but the U Boat escaped undamaged.

The Loss
H.M.S. Boadicea
The scout cruiser H.M.S. Boadicea was employed on Dark Night Patrol on Saturday, 12th January in the North Sea to the east of Orkney. The screening vessels were the destroyers H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough.
The weather conditions when the vessels left Scapa Flow that day were very favourable, wind Northeast 1 clear, and fine glass low but steady. At 18.22 H.M.S. Boadicea sent a wireless message ordering the destroyer escort to return to Scapa Flow due to worsening weather conditions. by 20.00 there were very heavy snow showers over the east coast of Orkney.
At 20.21 on the 12th January a wireless message was received from H.M.S. Opal ''have run aground'' . At 21.16 a message with a partial position was received followed immediately by fragments of what seemed to be a message in plain language, consisting of about seven words and made twice, but the message was so broken that nothing intelligible could be made of it. It is thought that the first word was "PENTLAND". No message at all was received from H.M.S Narborough.
Nothing could be done that night due to the heavy snow showers but the following morning the trawler Diana and Tug Alliance set out to search around the Pentland Skerries and Duncansby Head. Later the Scapa minesweeping trawlers were sent out to search the Pentland Firth. The coast watching patrols ere sent to search the coasts but heavy snow drifts prevented this from being effective.
No wreckage was found apart from an officer's washstand marked "Sub Lieutenant, H.M.S.NARBROUGH had been picked up about half a mile south from the Pentland Skerries.
On Monday, 14th January, a close search was made of the East coast of South Ronaldshay and at 09.30 the wrecks of both H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough were discovered in Windwick Bay by H.M.S. Castor.
The only survivor found was A.B. William Sissons, He was found sheltering in a small cave above Clett of Crura, immediately above the wrecks. Once recued he was taken to the hospital ship H.M.H.S China suffering from exposure.
It is thought both ships were lost either by H.M.S. Opal steering a wrong course or not allowing for the set of the tide to the north and H.M.S Narborough following did not realise the mistake. The account in the section below given by A.B. Sissons to the enquiry gives some good details to what happened that night.

I have the honour to forward the following report on statements of W.Sissons, A.B., G.L.2, of H.M.S. "OPAL" who at the time of his ship striking was one of the gun's crew of the watch at the midship gun.
While searching for wreckage of H.M.S. "Opal" and "Narborough" in Windwick Bay on Monday 14th January 1918. at 9.20 a.m.
wreckage was sighted on the Clett of Crura. After closing to a safe distance I proceeded in the whaler to the wreckage to establish its identity before reporting to Commodore (F). Three trawlers arrived from southward and I gave them position of wreck and one of them the "M. Maloney" lowered her boat to examine the wreckage. Sea was calm but there was a heavy swell from south eastward making examination of wrecks difficult and dangerous. A man was sighted ashore who signalled by semaphore that he was a survivor from the "Opal" so I proceeded to the trawler "M. Maloney" to obtain lines to rescue him. In the meanwhile the "M. Maloney's" boat had managed to rescue the man.
I took over the survivor W.Sissons and returned to my ship where he was rendered medical assistance and on the arrival of "Castor" at 10.45 a.m. I was ordered to return to base and discharge survivor to Hospital Ship "China".
The following information was obtained from survivor who though suffering from exposure gave intelligent answers to all questions.
About 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, 12th January, H.M.S. "Opal" and "Narborough" were in company "Opal" leading. There was a thick
blizzard on at the time and a heavy following sea. "OPAL" struck heavily about three times and shortly after appeared to slide into deeр water. Almost immediately after striking "Opal" was pooped by the following sea which filled up her after part and carried away her funnels and mast. After apparently sliding into deeper water her fore part broke off at the break of the forecastle and the remainder foundered in about a quarter of an hour from striking. Directly "OPAL" who, Sissons states, had been sounding with sounding machine, struck she blew three blasts on her siren which were answered by "Narborough".
Narborough"" appeared to pass "Opal" on the port quarter, strike heavily and heel well over.
Nothing more of "Narborough" was seen by the survivor. He states that Captain and Sub Lieutenant of "Opal" were on the bridge at the time of striking and after striking orders were given to abandon ship. He did not observe any boat manage to get away safely and states that the Carley Floats were launched but owing to sea no one could remain on them. He swam ashore and reached a ledge, with crevices, well sheltered from the wind, with about 50 yards to walk about on. He kept himself alive
with shellfish and snow, and at one time managed to scale the cliff to within a few feet of the top but fell back again.
He considers that men on deck before the midship gun-platform should have had some chance of saving themselves but can give no
information as to anyone from Narborough"".

He has climbed on to the pom-pom stand aft, and there he is found—frostbitten, but alive. Not in the heat of victory, cheered on to the great endeavour, with their battle flags to light them on to manful deeds, or with the roar of the guns in their ears as they speak with the Lion's voice. No, but with a icy under-tow sucking them down — down, and the roar of the tumbled waters in their ears, as their frozen fingers are torn from the slippery weed on the rocks. So perished the ships company of H.M.S. Narborough, one night in mid-January, 1918. Forgotten by the many: remembered by the few. Hark to the North Wind as it whistles through the eaves; it speaks of a great sacrifice.
At eventide when the North Wind strays—
to tell of the price our Empire pays: Lest we forget!

First entry gave a position, 584615N, 025548W, and stated that Narbrough was in same position at Clett of Clura, Windwick. The reporting authority was not stated.
In 1926 a description of the wreck sites is as follows : '' Wrecks laying close under cliffs heading in a northerly direction about 80 yds from each other. Northern vessel is a mass of broken iron work on ledge of rock. Southern vessel less broken & in deeper water. No mast or funnels showing & both almost entirely submerged at HW. Posn 584615N, 025548W.'' The wrecks were added to the chart 2 DW (Dangerous Wreck) (1918).
An update in 1936 stated: ''Wrecks now owned by Messrs Southerland (sic) and Mawat (sic).''
In 1958 the wrecks were added to chart 2162 - Pentland Firth and approaches as DW (Dangerous Wreck)
The last update was in 1986 by diver B Winfield who reported: '' Northerly area of wk site dived. Much scattered wreckage and 3 inch shell cases, well battered and eroded by tidal action, litter the seabed. No danger to navigation. Gen depth 11 mtrs. Rocky bottom slopping seawards.''
The wreck was then updated to NDW (Non-Dangerous Wreck)
From the testimony of A.B. William Sissons it can be concluded that the northern most wreck is H.M.S. Opal and the southern wreck H.M.S. Narborough.

THREE INJURED IN EXPLOSION DETONATOR FOUND ON SHORE John C. Halcro, a twenty-two-year old farm labourer, of South Ronaldshay, Orkney, was examining a detonator he had found on the seashore, when it exploded. Halcro, his mother and his sister were injured, and the kitchen of their home, in which the explosion occurred, was badly damaged. After first aid had been rendered by a neighbour, the injured man was rushed to the Balfour Hospital, Kirkwall, by motor boat. It appears that while gathering whelks on the beach at Banks, South Ronaldshay, with another man, Halcro found three detonators. They are stated to have been charged with fulminate of mercury, and are presumed to have been washed ashore from the wrecks of either the Opal or the Narborough. two British destroyers which ran ashore during the war. Salvage operations are now proceeding on the wrecks.

The auxiliary smack Rosedale loaded a cargo of scrap metal on Thursday and Friday. The scrap was brought to Stromness by Mr J. Mouat's salvage drifter White Oak from the wrecks of H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough, lost at Windwick Bay, South Ronaldshay, during the War. This war-time tragedy, which occurred during a blinding snowstorm, was responsible for the loss of both crews, with the exception of one seaman, who managed to reach the cliffs. The accident took place on a Saturday night, and the sole survivor was not discovered until the following Monday forenoon.

Halcro, his mother and his sister were injured, and the kitchen of their home, in which the explosion occurred, was badly damaged. After first aid had been rendered by a neighbour, the injured man was rushed to the Balfour Hospital, Kirkwall, by motor boat. It appears that while gathering whelks on the beach at Banks, South Ronaldshay, with another man, Halcro found three detonators. They are stated to have been charged with fulminate of mercury, and are presumed to have been washed ashore from the wrecks of either the Opal or the Narborough. two British destroyers which ran ashore during the war. Salvage operations are now proceeding on the wrecks.

The auxiliary smack Rosedale loaded a cargo of scrap metal on Thursday and Friday. The scrap was brought to Stromness by Mr J. Mouat's salvage drifter White Oak from the wrecks of H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough, lost at Windwick Bay, South Ronaldshay, during the War. This war-time tragedy, which occurred during a blinding snowstorm, was responsible for the loss of both crews, with the exception of one seaman, who managed to reach the cliffs. The accident took place on a Saturday night, and the sole survivor was not discovered until the following Monday forenoon.

In 2007, a diver, Peter Brady, diving from from a RIB found a gold wedding ring on the site of HMS Opal.
The ring was inscribed “To Stanley from Flo – 6 March 1916” I bit of detective work by the divers using Brian Budge's crew list soon found out the ring belonged to E.R.A. Cubiss. The ring was returned to relatives of Ernest Cubiss who then donated the ring and some other items to the museum at Lyness. |

A Naval Casualty.—News has just been received the relatives of the death by drowning Engineer Lieut. Commander Dampier-Child. His widow and three little daughters reside Avilion, North Berated, Bognor. Lieut.- Commander Dampier-Child was born in 1888 and was educated at Oakham Grammar School. In 1897 he entered the Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, Devonport. Five years later went to the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, where he remained a year. His first appointment was to H.M.S. ‘'Albion," which for two years was at the China station. In 1905 he was appointed to H.M.S. "Grafton," a guard ship at Portsmouth. 1907 he married the youngest daughter of late Rev. Alfred Child, and of Mrs. Child, then living at Weybridge, now of Bognor. After his marriage he took a course of gunnery at H.M.S. "Vernon," and was appointed in 1908 to the China station on H.M.S. "Monmouth." April, 1910, he returned and was appointed to H.M.S. “Leven." His next appointment was to a ship of the Dreadnought class, H.M.S. "Temeraire,’ a battleship over 18,000 tons. Later he was transferred to a torpedo boat destroyer. In May, 1915, he left to superintend the building of a ship to which was commissioned, and on which he lost his life.

The sad news of the death of Stoker John Hore was received on Wednesday week. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hore, of Penbuff, Foxhole, and was beloved by all who knew him. The letter that has been received is as follows: Sir, -- It is my painful duty to inform you that H.M.S. 'Opal' was lost at sea after grounding in very heavy weather with a violent snow storm raging, on the 12th instant, and that only one of the crew, an able-seaman, was saved. In these circumstances it is deeply regretted that John Thomas Hore, rating stoker first-class, who was on board at the time, must in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, be regarded as having lost his life.

Lieutenant R. E. Lewis-Lloyd, lost with one of the destroyers which stranded on the Scottish coast on the 12th inst. , was the only child of the late Mr. R. W. Lewis- Lloyd, of Rhayader. He was gazetted midship man in January, 1913, and appointed at the same time to the Lion, in which ship he took part in the battles of the Bight arid the Dogger Bank. In July, 1915, he was appointed to the Iron Duke, but after a few months entered the destroyer service. His vessel did good work in the Jutland fight, her commander being mentioned, and Lieutenant Lloyd was serving in the same vessel when she was lost. Last year, when he came of age, he inherited the large estates of Otterhead, on the borders of Devon and Somerset, and Byntirion, in Radnorshire.

Surgeon Probationer L. Percy St. J. Story, son of Rev. L. P. Story, rector of Christ Church, Belfast, has been drowned at sea.
Irish Field - Saturday 19 January 1918
News has just been received that Surgeon Probationer L. P. Bt. J. Story, R.N.V.R., was drowned at sea on 12th inst. Educated at Cavan Royal School and R.A. Institution, Belfast, he entered Belfast University Medical School in 1913-14, and immediately obtained his place on the 'Varsity Hockey XL at the early age of 17. He gave promise of having a really fine outside right, and that season played for Ulster in the inter-provincials. War, however, broke out, and in 1915, when he obtained his second medical examination he volunteered as Surgeon Probationer, and since then has been on active service with the Grand Fleet, He was through the Battle of Jutland, and had seen much service on a destroyer. His death will cause much regret to all who knew him, as he was extremely popular in the Service and at the 'Varsity.

BELFAST SURGEON DROWNED. The Admiralty has notified Rev. L. P. Story, ; Rector of Christ Church, Belfast, that his son, Surgeon-Probationer Louis Percy St. J. Story, R.N., H.M.S. —, was drowned at on 12th inst. The deceased, who a graduate Queen's University, Belfast, took his degree last year, and immediately entered the Navy. He was a young man of high promise proems. and his early death will be deplored by a wide circle of friends.
