The vessel was originally known the Duke of Lancaster, and was engaged, for many years, in the service of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. Subsequently for brief period she passed into the ownership of a Turkish firm in Constantinople, but was never' sent out to Turkey owing to the war with Italy in which the Ottoman Empire was engaged.

The steel t.-s.s. Duke of York, 1,473 tons gross, 391 tons net, built and engined by Messrs. W. Denny and Bros., Dumbarton, in 1894, with engines (6-cy.) 23in. 352in. and 53in., by 33in. stroke: and the steel t.-s.s. Messrs. H. E. Moss and Co.
Eventually the vessel was purchased by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and renamed S.S. The Ramsey.

MANX STEAMERS.
STEAM PACKET COMPANY'S LATEST ADDITIONS
Thanks to the spirited enterprise of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, the magnificent feet of passenger steamers on the Manx service has just been added to by the purchase of two of the splendidly appointed vessels formerly belonging to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company and sailing ‘between Fleetwood and Belfast, viz., the Duke of York and the Duke of Lancaster. As previously stated in our columns, these popular and speedy cross channel boats have been re-named Peel Castle and The Ramsey.
During the past few weeks they have undergone a thorough overhaul and been adapted for the requirements of the Manx traffic. The steamers will, no doubt, become great favourites with voyagers- especially week- enders to the Isle of Man as for night running both vessels have 40 cabins each, with two to four berths.
The Ramsey is due to take the 2.45 p.m. sailing from Liverpool to Douglas to-morrow, while the Peel Castle will be placed on the service in a few days' time.
In 1914 the ship was taken over by the Admiralty and named HMS Ramsey.

The Loss
While on patrol n the Moray Firth HMS Ramsey sighted a large tramp steamer flying the Russian flag. The ship was ordered to stop and a boarding party prepared to inspect the vessel. This is when the true identity of the vessel was revealed.
Below is a description of the sinking by one of the survivors.
"The Ramsey left Scapa Flow about 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 7th 1915, for the North Sea. About midnight, a wireless message came through to the Lieutenant-Commander to keep a sharp lookout to the Eastward. All went well until about 5 a.m., Sunday morning, when the smoke of a vessel was seen on the horizon.
The Ramsey at once gave chase, and in half-an-hour came up to what, from all outward appearances, seemed to be a large tramp steamer. We blew for her to stop, as we wanted to board her. Both men and ship were well disguised, She stopped, and, when we had got to within a short distance of her, the captain hauled down his flag, which was Russian, and immediately hoisted the German flag. At the same time, the raider opened fire with machine guns, and two 4.6 guns, which were on disappearing mounts, forward and aft. With these, she gave us the benefit of a broadside, sweeping our decks with bullets and shells, killing the Commander, Lieut. Raby, R.N.R., and the officers who were with him on the bridge. At the same time she released a torpedo, which struck the Ramsey aft, just where the crew’s quarters were situated. This was the cause of very many lives being lost, as the majority of the crew were below deck. The Ramsey had no time to reply to the gunfire, as, when the torpedo struck her, the stern was shattered, and she went down in less than four minutes.''

THE METEOR. There are several Meteors in the German mercantile marine, but the one which destroyed the Ramsey was probably that belonging Hamburg-America Line. She was a twin-screw vessel of 3,613 tons, built in 1904 at Hamburg.

THE RAMSEY’S CASUALTIES. The Admiralty issued last night a list 39 petty officers and men reported to have been saved from the sunken patrol vessel H.M.S. Ramsey. Eighteen the men belong to a specially entered mercantile crew, and of the total number eleven are wounded or slightly injured. Names are also given of five officers of the Ramsey who are lost. They are: Lieut. Harry Raby. Acting Lieut. Charles P. Beattie. Acting Lieut J. Usher. Assistant Engineer George M. Cottle; and Assistant Paymaster Seymour G. Duprey, all of the Royal Naval Reserve.

Lieutenant Beatty, H.M.S. Ramsey Among the officers lost by the torpedoing of H.M.S. Ramsey on the 8th inst. was Acting Lieutenant Charles Perceval Beatty, whose mother resides at 14 Warrender Park Road, Edinburgh. Shortly before the outbreak of the war he obtained his master's certificate in the Mercantile Marine Service, and was acting as first mate of a Lieth-owned vessel which was unable to leave Riga.
Along with his brother officers and the crew Mr. Beattie, after many hardships, succeeded in making his way to Scotland through Sweden and Norway, and on reaching home applied for and obtained a command as sub- lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve. He attended a course of gunnery on H.M.S. Excellent, and after passing the necessary examination was appointed gunnery officer on H.M.S. Ramsey

LOST IN HMS THE RAMSEY
One of the officers lost in H.M.S. The Ramsey, when she was attacked and sunk by the German mine-layer Meteor, was Acting Lieut. Charles Percival Beattie, R.N.R. Lieut. Beattie was a promising young officer, and had worked himself up from the bottom rung of the ladder. He was a native of Edinburgh, and was only 28 years of age. He began his seagoing career in 1900 as an O.S. in the steamer Bellona, but after a short time in this vessel he shipped in the Benlarig, belonging to Leith and remained in this vessel for about 12 months, when he joined the St. Ives steamers of Hain and Sons, and served in several of these vessels before the mast. He next shipped in the City of Naples as Quartermaster and A.B., where he remained for nearly 12 months, when he succeeded in securing his 2nd mate's certificate, and was appointed 2nd officer of the steamer Penelope. Later he joined the steamer Dunbar as 2nd officer, remaining for over 18 months, the latter part of the time as chief officer. Mr Beattie having put in his qualifying time for master, decided to sit for his examination. This he did in July, 1914, and was successful to his old vessel, the Penelope, as chief officer, but resigned his position in September with a view of getting a commission in the R.N.R. This he received on October 23, 1914, as Sub-Lieut., and was appointed to H.M.S. Excellent for training in gunnery. In November Lieut. Beattie was appointed temporary Acting-Lieut. of H.M.S. The Ramsey, of which he was gunnery officer until August 8, when the vessel was sunk, and Lieut. Beattie was one of the unfortunate victims. His was a promising career cut short, for although Lieut. Beattie had entered on his sea career through the "hawespipe," in eight years he had secured his masters' ticket, and received a commission in H.M. Naval Reserve, certainly a bright example of what diligence and perseverance can attain to. Sincere sympathy is extended to his bereaved mother and family in the great loss they have sustained.

THE RAMSEY’S CASUALTIES. The Admiralty issued last night a list 39 petty officers and men reported to have been saved from the sunken patrol vessel H.M.S. Ramsey. Eighteen the men belong to a specially entered mercantile crew, and of the total number eleven are wounded or slightly injured. Names are also given of five officers of the Ramsey who are lost. They are: Lieut. Harry Raby. Acting Lieut. Charles P. Beattie. Acting Lieut J. Usher. Assistant Engineer George M. Cottle; and Assistant Paymaster Seymour G. Duprey, all of the Royal Naval Reserve.

The following reference to the loss of one of the. crew was written previous to the official intima- tion, permitting details of the occurrence to be published:-
Lerwick, Wednesday night. Word has been received in Burra Isle that a young R.N.R. man, named John Arthur Fullerton, residing at Roadside, Hamnavoe, has given his life in his country's cause..
Details to hand are meagre, and the circum- stances of his death have not yet been intimated. Deceased was an old R.N.R. man, and was called up on the outbreak of war. The news of his death has been received with feelings of deep regret in his island home, where he was known as a skilful sea- man and respected as a true friend and neighbour. Much sympathy is expressed with the widow and two young children who are left to mourn his loss.

GILBERTSON. —Lost by the sinking of the H.M.S. *“ Ramsey,” in the North Sea, on 8th August, Charles Gifford Gilbertson, seaman aged 27 years. Dearly loved and sadly missed.
He is gone to be with Jesus, We cannot wish him here: We would not dim his radiant lot With mortal stain or tear. For he is folded safely Upon that gentle breast, Where many a weary lamb of earth Has found eternal rest. The stroke was heavy, the shock severe To part with one we loved so dear; Our loss is great, we'll not complain, But trust in Christ to meet again. His loving face and gentle smile So pleasant to recall; He had a kindly word for each, And died beloved by all. THE RAMSEY DISASTER

CHARLES GILBERTSON The above is a portrait of Charles Gilbertson, R.N.R., who went down with H.M.S., Ramsey, which was sunk by the Meteor. Deceased was a native of Whalsay, but had settled in Luunasting, where his wife predeceased him in May last. He was a bright young man, and popular with a wide circle, and a special favourite with his shipmates, He is survived by three children of tender age, the voungest being under a year.

THE H.M.S. RAMSEY DISASTER. WHALSAY MEN AMONG THE CREW.
THE above is a photograph of four of the Whalsay young men who formed part of the crew of the ill-fated patrol steamer Ramsey, which was sunk by the German armed liner Meteor. The photograph was taken shortly after the men joined the ship The two men on the right and left of the photograph-John Hutchison and Gilbert Hutchison Creeds, were were saved, and reached home last week. They are brothers, and are unmarried. The two men in the centre - Peter Hutchison Creedy Knowe (married, wife and three of a family), and William John Hutchison Creedy Knowe (unmarried)-are both unaccounted for.

The waters are not for evermore- There's land on the other side.
I remember the tone when he said farewell, Ere he started across the sea,

And I shall go to that beautiful land, By the side of the silvery sea,
Where even now the beloved ones stand, Looking and longing for me.

A LOCAL VICTIM. A victim of the sinking of H.M.S. Ramsey, the email armed patrol vessel whose loss is reported to-day, was Able-Seaman James D. McLellan, youngest son of John and M. McLellan, 26, Woodville-terrace, Liverpool. He belonged to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Mersey Division. He was called up the declaration the war and went through the siege of Antwerp. He was previously employed as a plumber, and was an old boy of Heyworth-street School. He was was twenty-two years of age.

THE RAMSEY VICTIMS. Information has just been received the Liverpool branch of the Marine Engineers' Association that two of the members of the branch lost their lives in the sinking of H.M.S. Ramsey by the German armed merchant cruiser Meteor. These members are Mr G. M. Pottie, of Bootle, second engineer, and Mr. J. H. Wood, of Douglas, I.0.M., fourth engineer. Another member, Mr. Fayle, chief engineer, is among the wounded survivors. Mr. G. M. Pottie was a member of the Marine Engineers' Association, and had been the service of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for many years prior to the outbreak of the war. resided at Blackburn-grove, Bootle.

Eighteen the men belong to a specially entered mercantile crew, and of the total number eleven are wounded or slightly injured. Names are also given of five officers of the Ramsey who are lost. They are: Lieut. Harry Raby. Acting Lieut. Charles P. Beattie. Acting Lieut J. Usher. Assistant Engineer George M. Cottle; and Assistant Paymaster Seymour G. Duprey, all of the Royal Naval Reserve.
