GALLANTRY OF LEITH SEAMAN.
Neil Brown, donkeyman on board the Leith steamer Morna, has within a few weeks rescued three persons from drowning. The Morna, which is now at from the Algerian ports with esparto, was lying at Oran when sailor belonging to the s.s. Indianopolis attempted to swim off to his vessel. He, however, became exhausted before reached his ship, and would have been drowned bad not Brown promptly rescued bim by jumping overboard from the Morna. Only few weeks ago, while the Morna was in Granton, one of Brown's shipmates, and a sailor from H.M.S. Sheldrake, lying near, fell into the water between the ship and the quay. Brown, hearing their cries, immediately sprang overboard, and held up the two men until they were hauled aboard. When be was brought up was very much exhausted, as he had on all his clothes. The latter act was all the more praise worthy as he ran a great risk of being crashed to death between the ship and the quay, as there was a nasty swell surging the ship about at the time. Such acts as those surely deserve to be suitably recognised by the Humane Society.

PROMOTION OF VULCAN WARRANT OFFICER. SUCCESSOR A NOTED MEDALIST FOR BRAVERY.
Warrant Officer Joseph G. Jones is promoted to be Lieutenant in His Majesty's Fleet as from May, 1910. He joined the navy in the early seventies, was promoted warrant officer on 17th April, 1885, and chief warrant officer on 6th August, 1904. has served in various parts of the world during his lengthy naval career. He has been held in high esteem by all ranks for unfailing courtesy and tact in the discharge of the arduous duties has been called upon to perform, and he leaves the Vulcan with the sincerest goodwill and best wishes of the whole of the ship's company. Lieutenant Jones is succeeded by Warrant Officer George B. Chainey, who the proud and unique possessor of gold, silver, and bronze medals of the Royal Humane Society —the Stanhope Gold Medal being awarded to him 1897 for the bravest deed of the year. The bronze medal was awarded to him on the Vulcan in 1905 for gallantry in attempting to save life. Warrant Officer Chainey served a commission on the Vulcan previous the present appointment.

We reproduce with great pleasure the photograph of Mr. H. Nelson, E.R.A., of HM.S. “Tyne,” son of Mr. W. H. Nelson, Earlsdon Avenue, Coventry, who gallantly jumped into the sea to save a man from drowning. The following is taken from “ The Scotsman.” “
RESCUE FROM DROWNING AT GRANTON.--
Yesterday morning an exciting incident which might have terminated with loss of life but for the courageous act of an unknown man was witnessed from the Middle Pier, Granton. Two men were coming ashore ih a small boat from a steam launch at anchor in the East Harbour, when both were thrown into the water in consequence of the boat filling and sinking shortly after leaving the launch. One of the men succeeded in reaching and supporting himself at the side of the launch, though unable to pull himself up to the deck level, while the other man, who could not swim, was left helpless in the water. He would undoubtedly have been drowned but for the prompt and courageous rescue effected by a naval artificer, who fortunately happened to be on the pier at the time and witnessed the accident. Springing to a steam drifter alongside the Pharos berth, he promply divested himself of jacket and vest, and swam out to the drowning man, whom he held up till a small boat came to their assistance and brought them ashore. The name of the ship of the rescuer is unknown, as after the accident and consequent excitement he quietly slipped away to the boat that was to‘convey ‘him to his vessel, at present anchored off the "harbour.”

On the 6th November 1915 while serving onboard HMS Africa, a man fell overboard from a picket boat in the Firth of Forth, there being a 3-knot tide running. Record went in after him and with a lifebuoy kept him afloat till they were picked up.

D.S.M. AWARDED TO DYSART STOKER
WHO RESCUED COMPANION FROM MINE-SWEEPER.
Leading Stoker Andrew Martin, whose home address la 2 Hill Street, Dysart, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for gallantry at sea. Stoker Martin, who was formerly employed at the Pannie Pit, Dunnikier Collieries, was, a member of the Fleet Reserve, until called up. on the outbreak of war, and for the past eighteen months has been engaged in the hazardous work of mine-sweeping. The deed which has gained for him the D.S.M was performed about the beginning of December, when the trawler on which was engaged struck a mine. Martin and another member of the crew were in the engine room at the time of the explosion. His companion was badly wounded about the head, but with Martin's assistance he managed to roach the deck The vessel sank within a few minutes, but before it took the final plunge Martin managed to fasten a lifebelt round his companion, who was in a somewhat dazed condition, and pushed him into water. Martin himself was caught the rigging as the ship went down, but, as he was beginning to think was all over with him he got clear. On reaching the surface he got hold of log of wood which was floating about, and again went to the assistance of his companion, whom he succeeded in keeping afloat until they were both picked up after having been in the water for about half an hour. Martin's companion, unfortunately, died from his wounds a few hours later. Stoker Martin some years ago was the recipient of a commemorative medal from the King of Italy for services rendered to the victims of the Messina earthquake, at which time he was serving on H.M.S. Euryalis.
