THE NEW DESTROYER LYNX.
Launched from Messrs, Harland Wolff Clyde Yard.
The London and Glasgow Engineering and Shipbuilding Co., Govan, whose works and yard form Messrs. Harland & Wolff's Clyde branch establishment, launched on 20th H..M.S. Lynx, one of three torpedo boat destroyers which are present under construction in their works for the British Navy. The dimensions of the Lynx are;—Length between perpendiculars. 260 feet; and breadth. 27 feet. She is fitted with Parson’s turbines, designed to develop 25,000 h.p., and has water-tube, oil fired boilers the Yarrow type. Her armament will consist of three 4 in. guns and two torpedo tubes. These destroyers are the Acasta class, which represent important development in destroyer construction, and are expected attain a very high speed. The Lynx has been constructed under the supervision of Mr. H. G. White, hull overseer, and Engineer- Commander Ash. R N.. engineer overseer, assisted by Engineer-Lieutenant Whyham. R.N.. senior engineer of the ship, all of whom, and Captain Glossop, of H.M.S. Sydney; Engineer Lieutenant Coleman, Engineer Lieutenant Fowler, and Lieutenant Finlayson were amongst those present at the launch. The launching ceremony was performed Mrs. Whyham. and afterwards the builders entertained the guests to luncheon, Mr. John Dickinson, general manager, presiding.

The Sinking of HMS Lynx
The British destroyer HMS Lynx was on patrol in the Moray Firth on the night of 8-9 August 1915. An enemy minefield was known to exist, but its exact extent was not accurately known. .

At 10.40 p.m. on 8 August, Lynx received a message that was sent to all of the destroyers on outer patrol in the Moray Firth, ordering them to keep at least five miles to the eastward of the N-R line (Noss Head to Rosehearty), and well clear of the minefield.
At 06.10hrs on 9 August HMS Lynx struck a mine near No 1 boiler room which wrecked and severed the forepart of the destroyer. 10 minutes later a second violent explosion occurred as the aft part possibly struck another mine. 63 crew were lost along with her Captain, Cdr .J.Cole. There were only 26 survivors.
There was no information at the extent of the minefield but was not thought to extended north of latitude 58°, but HMS Lynx had been warned that it was feared the minefield extended across the Firth.
A signal made on 8th August only directed Lynx to pass north of latitude 58°. She was sunk in latitude 58° 09N.
Survivors were picked up by the SS Volcano about 8.30am.

We have the honour to report that, in compliance with your signal of the 10th August 1915, we have held a full and careful enquiry into the circumstances attending the loss of H.M.S. ''LYNX'' in the Moray Firth on the morning of Monday, 9th August and we find the following:-
(1) In view of the known existence of a minefield in the Moray Firth, we are of opinion that the ''LYNX'' was lost about 6.10 A.M. on Monday August 9th, through striking a mine while proceeding from the Northern part of the N.R. patrol line to a rendezvous in Lat 57 58 N 2 40 W
(2) There is no evidence to show the exact position at the time of striking the mine. We have, however, been informed that the survivors were picked up by S.S. ''Volane''., about 8.30 A.M. in Lat 58 7N 2 38 1/2W.
(3) The explosion apparently occurred before No. 1 Boiler Room, and probably No.2 War Tank, wrecking and severing the fore part of the ship, as far aft as No.1 Boiler Room.
(4) It was practically low water neap tides in that vicinity at the time of the explosion. The rise and fall is approximately 8 feet, and the ''LYNX'' was drawing about 9 feet 6 inches under the fore bridge.
(5) The evidence proves that a second violent explosion occurred in the vicinity of No.1 Boiler Room, between five and ten minutes and we are of opinion that this was caused by the after part of the ship drifting against a second mine.
(6) The large loss of life is due to the majority of the ship's company having been on the Mess Deck and Bridge, under which the explosion occurred.
(7) The evidence shows that there was no panic of any sort, but there was an absence of centralised control, which can be attributed to the severe effect of the explosion on the survivors. This lack of control, however, was not responsible for any additional loss of life.
(8) Much of the evidence we have had is very conflicting, and it must be pointed out that the great majority of the witnesses were evidently suffering from severe strain and shock.
(9) From the evidence, it appears that during the night of the 8th - 9th August, there was only two Destroyers on the N.R. patrol line, instead of three, as is usually the case. The unusual procedure adopted of placing the Grand Fleet Destroyers on the Northern part of the patrol, was probably due to the knowledge the Senior Officer had of the position of the suspected minefield.
(10) We are satisfied that the Captain of the ''LYNX'' was in possession of all available information as regards the position and presence of mines in the Moray Firth, and that no blame is attributable to anyone for her loss.

UKHO
A wreck was located in 580957N, 023022W by the MV Lady Harrison in 1986. This was reported to UKHO, charted, and given Wreck Card number 1324.
Divers who dived on the charted wreck site in 2000, from the dive vessel MV. Karin, describe seeing no engines, boilers or a bow or stern section but the wreck had some ''dominating features''
'' WRECKAGE IS WELL BROKEN UP, BUT DESPITE 7 DIVERS ON THE WK THE BOW, STERN, ENGINE OR BOILERS WERE NOT LOCATED. THE MOST DOMINATING FEATURE ARE FOUR INVERTED 'V' SHAPES EACH WITH A CYLINDER AT THE APEX OF THE V. THE SIDES OF THESE STRUCTURES APPEAR TO BE MADE OF PIPES AND THE CYLINDER AT THE APEX HAS A HOLE IN IT ON THE TOP AND THERE APPEARS TO BE A SECOND, CONCENTRIC, CYLINDER INSIDE. THE FOUR STRUCTURES ARE ALL IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A GAP OF ABOUT 6 FEET BETWEEN EACH. EACH STRUCTURE IS ABOUT 12 FEET WIDE WITH THE CYLINDERS ABOUT 6 FEET IN DIAMETER.''
These features were deduced by Bob Baird to, in fact, be the Yarrow boilers from HMS Lynx.
The divers reported a number of further contacts located around the site by echo sounder to UKHO but these were not dived. These new sites were recorded as wreck card 58700 & wreck card 58701,
A MBES survey by Netsurvey located the main site at position 58°09,913'N 02°30,73'W and the wreckage has the dimensions 59,8m x 9,6m x 4,3m and orientated 125/305 deg. Some further debris was located 135m north of this site.
Netsurvey conducted a wider survey, using MBES, to locate the debris reported to UKHO by the divers. The debris recorded on wreck card 58700 & wreck card 58701, were not located and amended to ''DEAD''

Although dived in 2000 it was decided to dive and photograph HMS Lynx as part of the project and produce 3D model and a photographic record of the wreck

Torquay Naval Officer Lost on H.M.S. "Lynx" Com. John F. H. Cole, R.N., who was lost in H.M.S. " Lynx," was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Cole, Fell Court, Torquay. He served on the Mediterranean, China and Pacific Stations, and was promoted commander in 1912. He was torpedo specialist and when a lieutenant served on the junior staff of the '' Vernon'' and at the Admiralty. Later he received appointment commanding officer of one of the destroyers acting as leader a division in the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla. When war broke out Commander Cole was serving in the ''Vigilant." He was then appointed to the command of the " Lance," and later to the " Lynx." In 1906 Com. Cole married Ethel Sophie, eldest daughter of Mr. and' Mrs. J. S. Bartholomew, Moorlands, Devizes, Wilts, and leaves two sons and two daughters.

He was torpedo specialist and when a lieutenant served on the junior staff of the '' Vernon'' and at the Admiralty. Later he received appointment commanding officer of one of the destroyers acting as leader a division in the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla. When war broke out Commander Cole was serving in the ''Vigilant." He was then appointed to the command of the " Lance," and later to the " Lynx." In 1906 Com. Cole married Ethel Sophie, eldest daughter of Mr. and' Mrs. J. S. Bartholomew, Moorlands, Devizes, Wilts, and leaves two sons and two daughters.

Portsmouth Hero's Funeral. The funeral took place at Cromarty last week of the remains of the late Arthur Cyril Hodges, stoker Petty Officer, of H.M.S. Lynx, which was sunk a short time ago, presumably by contact with a floating mine. Some of the crew escaped on a raft, and Hodges with the greatest self-sacrifice any man could make, gave up his place on the raft to a comrade. Hodges body warn subsequently picked up by another destroyer and was taken ashore for burial. At the funeral full Naval honours were accorded. The body was borne to the grave on a gun carriage, a firing party of fifty Marines, and 40 petty officer comrades, led by a full band, attending. The deceased's two brothers were the chief mourners, while the Vice-Admiral of the command was also present. and afterwards shook hands with the relatives. to whom he expressed kindly sympathy. Deceased was the youngest son of Mrs. Hodges, who resides at 137, Lakeroad, Landport.

Lynx was sunk on the 9th last., and that the name of his son, Walter Lightfoot, A.B., did not appear the list of those saved, and under these circumstances must regarded as having lost his life. The deceased was 24 years of age, and had seen five years service in the Navy. He was not married.

The news of the loss of H.M.S. Lynx in the North Sea has caused considerable anxiety as to the fate of two local men, Archibald G. Steer., of Worthing, and G. Lock, of Broadwater. Both these men were serving on the Lynx, and neither of their names appear is the list of the saved. but there is of course, just a possibility that they may have been transferred to another vessel before the Lynx started on what has proved her last cruise.

Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, of 52, Trafford Street, Scunthorpe, received information from the Admiralty that H.M.S Lynx was sunk on August 9th, and that the name of their son, George William Miller, who was a first-class stoker, with nine years service to his credit, did not appear on the list of those saved, and, under must be regarded as lost. The deceased was well known in the ironstone district, and was highly respected. He was only married last October.

Taylor as a boy worked for some time at Messrs. Smith and Sons' bookstall, and afterwards became a telegraph messenger at the Poet Office.

"Lynx. - which came into contact with mine in the North Sea on Monday and foundered. was Engine Artificer Joseph Fletcher Seddon. of 9, St. Albans Road. Whitegate. drive, Blackpool. Artificer Seddon. who was 39 years of was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. R Seddon, and came over from the United States, where he had spent about ten years, in September, especially to join the Navy. He forfeited a lucrative position to fight for the Mother Country•. Artificer Seddon served his apprenticeship at Radcliffe, near Manchester, previous to going to the States, worked at Lytham and Fleetwood, and although he remained at these places only a comparatively short time, he formed a number of friendships, who will regret his misfortune. Artificer Seddon was one of 26 of the saved. but unfortunately he is most seriously Injured. His parent. received a wire early on Wednesday morning. conveying the that he was seriously injured, but no particulars were proffered beyond that his condition was critical. This news occasioned extreme anxiety to the family, who immediately got into telegraphic communication with the Admiralty, but they received no further news until yesterday morning. Artificer Seddon's parents were then informed by wire that he was on board the hospital ship "Garth Castle" at Cromarty Firth, that his condition was still critical. but he was slightly improving since the operation on Monday. The latter portion of the telegram has encouraged the parents to hope for the beet. They anxiously await further information from the Admiralty.

On Tuesday evening Miss Micklethwaite received a telegram from her fiancée, stating that was in the best of health, but she did not understand the purport of the message until she saw an account of the disaster in yesterday’s papers.

MARSDEN. Saved from the Lynx.—Harold Warwick a first-class stoker, one of the survivor H.M.S. Lynx, is engaged to be married to Miss Beatrice Micklethwaite, daughter of Mr. Parker Micklethwaite, of Ottiwell Terrace, Marsden. NAVAL WEDDING AT MARSDEN,
A SURVIVOR FROM THE '' LYNX ''
Tremendous interest was centered in the wedding which was solemnized at St. Baretholomew’s Church, Marsden, yesterday, of Miss Beatrice Micklethwaite, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Parker Micklethwaite, Ottiwell's Terrace, Marsden, and Stoker Harold Warwick, a survivor of H.M. Destroyer “Lynx," sunk by a mine in the North Sea ten days "previously, Miss Micklethwaite is a very, ' popular Sunday School teacher at the Church and up to her marriage was employed by Mr. J. E. Crowther, Bank Bottom Mills, as a weaver. Her many friends and acquaintances trooped down to the church in their hundreds to witness the happy and romantic marriage. Stoker Warwick, whose proper home is at Mansfield, Nottingham, has made his temporary home—when on leave—for the last two years with Mrs. J. B. Coldwell, Lees Mill, Golcar. He seems to have borne & charmed life, for previous to the sad disaster last week, he has had many narrow 'escapes from death. On one occasion he was sleeping in the lower of two bunks in his cabin, when the ship was struck by a shrapnel shell, and the bunk above was riddled by bullets, he himself being uninjured. Stoker Warwick had just left one of the large rooms below deck when the Destroyer “Lynx" struck the mine, and all the occupants of that room perished in the violent explosion which followed. He dived overboard, and was in the water four hours before being picked up. He was a powerful swimmer. The bride was given away by her brother; Mr. Albert Micklethwaite., and was attended by two bridesmaids—Miss Rachael Livesey, (friend) and Mrs. J. E. Coldwell (bride’s cousin’s wife.) The bride herself was smartly attired in a gown of dark champagne eolienne, with hat to match trimmed with wings, and veil. Miss Livesey wore a grey costume and dark brown hat with marguerites, while Coldwell wore a white silk poplin dress with dark brown hat trimmed with roses. Stoker Warwick wore the plain but becoming naval uniform, and had for his best man Mr. J. k. Coldwell (cousin of . the bride), while Mr. Harold Micklethwaite | (brother) performed the duties of groomsman, The Rev. F. S, Keene, ‘B.A, vicar, tied the nuptial knot. A reception was held | at the home of the bride’s parents, at which only relatives were present. The bridegroom has been granted fourteen ‘days‘ leave of absence winch expires on Friday next, when he is to report himself at Portsmouth tor further duties on board one of His Majesty’s warships.
