Built by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. Ltd. - R & W Hawthorn, Hebburn-On-Tyne (Newcastle)in 1893 for Devlin Thomas L., Granton (Edinburgh) and given the registration GN43. Taken over in 1916 by the Admiralty and was last used as a Boom Vessel.

LAUNCHES AT LEITH.—There was launched yesterday from the yard of Messrs Hawthorns and Co, Leith. a finely modelled iron screw trawler, built to the order of Mr T. Devlin. junior, Newhaven. The vessel's dimensions 100 ft. by 20ft, by 11ft. 3in. She will be fitted by 'the builders with compound surface condensing engines. On leaving the ways she was christened Columba by Miss Devlin. She is expected to attain a speed of 11 knots, and is the 7th vessel built by Messrs Hawthorns for the same owner.

Columba (steam trawler), of Granton. has put into Leith for repairs, having been ashore on the rocks outside Newhaven Harbour: the trawler has two plates in her bottom damaged and a large number of rivets started.

The Loss
HMT Columba was on route to Firth of Forth to be used as a Boom Defence Vessel but struck a mine that had been laid by UC-40 earlier that day. Five of the crew were killed but three survivors were rescued. The body of Deck Hand Robert Coull was recovered.

On the 10th March 1917 UC 40 was active in the Firth of Forth and laid a minefield running north/south south of May Island. It was one of these mines that sank HMT Columba that same day.
The wreck
HMT Columba has the wreck Card 2933, The card says HMS COLUMBA (PROBABLY).
The original entry in 1918 states: 16.3.18 SUNK IN 560910N,023248W, 2 MILES S 8DEG W (MAG) FROM MAY IS. LTHO.
This was updated in 1925 to: INS NDWPA (1918) IN POAN 171 DEG, 2 MILES FROM LTHO ON 114A. BR STD.
In 1960 a survey conducted by HMS Scott failed to locate the wreck and it was deleted from the chart.
1984 an obstruction was located but not investigated in 560927N, 023346W (W MURNEY).
HMS Fawn further investigated the wreck in 1987 and gave the wreck a length of 26m standing 5.7m high in general depth of 55m. The amended position was 560931N, 023330W.
In 1990 the wreck was dived by Gordon Wadsworth. his description of the wreck on the wreck card states: ''DIVED ON AUG 1990 IN 560930N, 023348W. STANDS 4MTRS HIGH. SCOUR 2MTRS DEEP. SMALL STERN SECTION SITTING UPRIGHT SIMILAR TO TRAWLER BUT NO STERN GALLOWS''.
In 1993 the wreck was further examined by Oceonics (UK) Ltd. ''EXAM'D 4.8.93 IN 560931.4N, 023330.5W [OGB] USING MICROFIX [3 LOPS]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 46.2 IN GEN DEPTH 48.0MTRS. SCOUR DEPTH 51MTRS. DCS3 HT 5.4MTRS, LENGTH 25MTRS, BREADTH 6MTRS. INTACT, WELL DEFINED WK, LYING 060/240 DEG. A ROPE/CABLE LEADS SW FROM THE WK - PROBABLY SNAGGED FISHING GEAR.''

BOSTON WAN DROWNED AT SEA. BOAT BLOWN INTO THE AIR “LIKE A MATCH-BOX.” Mrs. Chambers, of 66, James-Street, Boston, has received the news (unofficially) that her youngest brother. Mr. Jesse Walker, who was well known in Boston, has lost his life sea. Mr. Walker, who was for some years in the employment of the Boston Deep Sea Fishing and Ice Company and had lived for the past two years in Bruntisland. Scotland, though he was over at Boston as recently Christmas last. Until recently he had been employed ashore for some time, but a few days ago went to sea for the purpose of bringing a boat from certain port. A friend of Mrs. Chambers says. ''All was well until they were off an island, which is about one and half hours to being safe home again, when they struck a mine or were torpedoed. The boat on which was on was blown into the air like match-box. and there were only three saved''.
Deceased, who was 59 years and a Bostonian, leaves two son's and daughter to mourn his death. One of the sons is engaged in mine-sweeping.
