Sir,
At 9.35 a.m. on 26th. August, Peterhead sweepers were sweeping astern of me,
line abreat to port, and M.S. 164 ''Jasper'' struck a moored mine in Lat 58.13N 2.22W (see chart below)
abaft the wheelhouse. She sank in less than a minute. The other sweepers went to
her assistance at once, and a mine also came to the surface about six cables away
which was exploded.
The boat ended up at once, the bows coming out of the water, great clouds of steam
and the smoke from the explosion.
Boats remained one hour looking for survivors and one officer, skipper, and three men
picked up as reported. No trace of the remainder of the crew.
Raft floated and much broken wreckage.
All that was possible was done to save life and all boats behaved very well.
I took the boats back to Wick as I considered it reckless to remain on the spot and to
run the risk of losing further boats, it being practically low water at the time.
I propose in future to sweep three hours each side of high water.
The boat was drawing 14ft. 9.in at the time.

In 1944 a non-sub contact was located and considered to possibly be HMT Jasper. ''NSC, WK, REPD IN 581124N, 022412W. PROBABLY JASPER.''
The wreck was surveyed in 1982 by Side Scan Sonar in position 58 12.46N, 02 25.40W.
The wreck was again surveyed in 2012, by Netsurvey, using MBES and magnetometer. The wreck was reported in position 58 12.732N, 02 25.713W in 58m of water. The contact dimensions were length 36m, width 7m with a height of 3.4m and the wreck recorded as ''Intact and upright''. The wreck was reported as a ''strong magnetic anomaly''.

I have the honour to forward herewith Lieut. Commander. Lucas's report on the sinking of
Minesweeping Trawler ''Jasper'' No. 164
The Surgeon and Agent was in attendance when the survivors arrived at Wick.
As mentioned in my wires, one officer and 3 men are suffering from shock and cuts, and the
4th. man P.O. Chilcott R.F.R. had his leg broken and was bleeding internally. He is in a serious
condition and is lying in the Bignold Cottage Hospital, Wick and I have telegraphed for his wife.
I have however just received a report from the Hospital to say that he is very much better.
The other three men are also at the Hospital and are doing well.
Lt Fleming R.N.R. has been accommodated in the Station Hotel, Wick. He is suffering from slight
shock.

BLOWN UP AT SEA. Former Boston Fishing Apprentice Killed. News has been received by Mrs. Davison, of Skirbeck Quarter, to the effect that her nephew, Mr. John Davison, son of Mr, Jack Davison, formerly of Boston, has been blown up on the mine-sweeper Jasper. The news was conveyed to her this week in a telegram from deceased’s wife, who lives at Hull, and was to the effect that his ship was blown up with all hands. He served his apprenticeship with the Boston Deep Sea Fishing and Ice Company, but a few years ago he married and went to Hull, and sailed regularly from that port on a trawler. On the outbreak of hostilities he was called up for minesweeping and joined the Jasper. He wrote some very cheerful and interesting letters, and at the time of his death had collected many war relics, which he expected to bring home.

Clayton, of Mariners -row, High-street, Boston, we are now able to publish the last letter written by Mr. J. Davison, who as we reported last week was blown up on the mine-sweeper Jasper. He was formerly a Boston fishing apprentice, so that the letter should be of interest to our readers— “Just a line hoping to find you well, as it leaves me at present, We are having a bad time down here on the mines, and have got more than any other section, add it is cruel when they explode. We are the luckiest people alive, I think two exploded alongside, and it is a wonder how we missed them. When they went off I thought the ship would be shaken to pieces for it filled the deck with powder and pieces of shell. I am saving a few pieces to show you when I come home. Where we have been it is terrible, and I have had no time to write. I am always thinking of you, especially when they (the mine) explode, I have been at it a fortnight now and shall he glad when we have finished. We have only had a few hours in port for a bit of coal, and have come in for a few stores, then out again; it is for days and nights. You hardly dare shut your eyes as the least little thing makes you jump, and we always have to wear our life collars and jackets, They make you tired. They say when we get these minefields clear we shall get leave for a few days. We put a man ashore to go under an operation, so we are short-handed. The above was written to his mother at Hull about two days before the ship was blown up.

SEVERAL LIVES LOST. Official information has been received by relatives at Hull that the trawler Jasper, registered at Grimsby, has been lost. A number -were drowned. Most of the crew belong Hull. The saved include Skipper .Cleveland of Hull. The drowned belong to Hull include:-- John Lamming Davison, husband of Mrs Davidson, 65 Subway-street, and the son of and Mrs Davidson, 289 Hassle-road.
The mate, named Salmon.

There can be no doubt entertained in the minds of the British public on reading the recently published lists of New Year Naval and Military Honours that the courage and determination of our brave seamen are as strong and unflinching as ever, and those who are well acquainted with the grit and tenacity of the loyal old merchant service will not be surprised to note the appearance of so many names of members of the Royal Naval Reserve. The secretary of the Mercantile Marine Service Association furnishes the following list of New Year Honours for the R.N.R.
In recognition of their bravery and devotion to duty during mine-sweeping operations, his Majesty has been pleased to confer the Distanguished Service Cross upon the following:- Lieut. William St Clair Fleming, R.N.R
