THE BASE, 1914-19, A PROUD RECORD. Losses, Promotions, and Distinctions. Happenings at Sea. December, 1914.—Trawler Tom it wrecked in Peterhead Bay during a heavy S.E. gale, involving the loss of the Peterhead Lifeboat and many lives.
February, 1915.—~Trawler Blakedown wrecked at Cruden. All hands were saved with the assistance of local people.
November, 1915.—Jasper struck a mine in Moray Firth and was blown up.
June, 1916.—Trawlers Onward, Era, and Nellie Nutten sunk by four German submarines. Crews of Onward and Era taken prisoner. Crew of Nellie Nutten returned to Aberdeen in Dutch lugger.
February, 1917 —Trawler Yesso struck a mine off Aberdeen Harbour, sunk; four hands lost.
June, 1917 ~Trawler Gelsina struck a mine and sank two miles east of Aberdeen; two men lost.
16th July, 1915.—Trawler Cameo engaged an enemy submarine, which was much more heavily armed, and capable of a very high rate of speed. The Cameo, although at great disadvantage, put up a plucky fight. She sustained considerable damage. One shot struck her in the fore part of the wheelhouse, penetrating the steel plating, smashing three spokes of the wheel, and passing out at the other side. The Skipper, although struck by splinters in the side and in one eye, remained at his post, and continued to steer his ship throughout the remainder of the action with the remnants of the wheel. Eventually, on the arrival of another trawler, the submarine made good her escape.
