H.M.S. Narborough was an M-class destroyer built by John Brown & Company on the Clyde, and launched in March 1916.
History
H.M.S. Narborough joined the 13th Destroyer Flotilla and took part in the Battle of Jutland but saw no action.

The Loss
H.M.S. Boadicea
The scout cruiser H.M.S. Boadicea was employed on Dark Night Patrol on Saturday, 12th January in the North Sea to the east of Orkney. The screening vessels were the destroyers H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough.
The weather conditions when the vessels left Scapa Flow that day were very favourable, wind Northeast 1 clear, and fine glass low but steady. At 18.22 H.M.S. Boadicea sent a wireless message ordering the destroyer escort to return to Scapa Flow due to worsening weather conditions. by 20.00 there were very heavy snow showers over the east coast of Orkney.
At 20.21 on the 12th January a wireless message was received from H.M.S. Opal ''have run aground'' . At 21.16 a message with a partial position was received followed immediately by fragments of what seemed to be a message in plain language, consisting of about seven words and made twice, but the message was so broken that nothing intelligible could be made of it. It is thought that the first word was "PENTLAND". No message at all was received from H.M.S Narborough.
Nothing could be done that night due to the heavy snow showers but the following morning the trawler Diana and Tug Alliance set out to search around the Pentland Skerries and Duncansby Head. Later the Scapa minesweeping trawlers were sent out to search the Pentland Firth. The coast watching patrols ere sent to search the coasts but heavy snow drifts prevented this from being effective.
No wreckage was found apart from an officer's washstand marked "Sub Lieutenant, H.M.S.NARBROUGH had been picked up about half a mile south from the Pentland Skerries.
On Monday, 14th January, a close search was made of the East coast of South Ronaldshay and at 09.30 the wrecks of both H.M.S. Opal and H.M.S. Narborough were discovered in Windwick Bay by H.M.S. Castor.
The only survivor found was A.B. William Sissons, He was found sheltering in a small cave above Clett of Crura, immediately above the wrecks. Once recued he was taken to the hospital ship H.M.H.S China suffering from exposure.
It is thought both ships were lost either by H.M.S. Opal steering a wrong course or not allowing for the set of the tide to the north and H.M.S Narborough following did not realise the mistake. The account in the H.M.S Opal page, given by A.B. Sissons to the enquiry gives some good details to what happened that night.

First entry gave a position, 584615N, 025548W, and stated that Opal was in same position at Clett of Clura, Windwick. The reporting authority was not stated.
In 1926 a description of the wreck sites is as follows : '' Wrecks laying close under cliffs heading in a northerly direction about 80 yds from each other. Northern vessel is a mass of broken iron work on ledge of rock. Southern vessel less broken & in deeper water. No mast or funnels showing & both almost entirely submerged at HW. Posn 584615N, 025548W.'' The wrecks were added to the chart 2 DW (Dangerous Wreck) (1918).
An update in 1936 stated: ''Wrecks now owned by Messrs Southerland (sic) and Mawat (sic).''
In 1958 the wrecks were added to chart 2162 - Pentland Firth and approaches as DW (Dangerous Wreck)
The last update was in 1986 by diver B Winfield who reported: '' Northerly area of wk site dived. Much scattered wreckage and 3 inch shell cases, well battered and eroded by tidal action, litter the seabed. No danger to navigation. Gen depth 11 mtrs. Rocky bottom slopping seawards.''
The wreck was then updated to NDW (Non-Dangerous Wreck)

HINCKLEY VICTIM OF WRECKED DESTROYER News is to hand that AB Stoker David Crutchlow, a Hinckley man, whose wife lives at 104 Mount Road went down on HM destroyer — — which struck the rocks on the Scottish coast on January 12th. It will be remembered that there was only one survivor.
Stoker Crutchlow was 26 years age and had served seven years with the Navy and time expiring last June He had travelled in nearly all parts of the globe on various warships and was on HMS “Onslaught” in the battle of Jutland He was Hinckley six weeks ago was expecting to come home last week on leave.

OLD CONWAY CADETS
EX-WHITE STAR OFFICER A V,C. RECIPIENT.
Two old cadets of H.M.S. Conway were specially mentioned in Admiral de Roebeck's despatches from the Dardanelles. Commander Edward Unwin, R.N., who was awarded the V.C., was on the Conway 1877-80. He retired from the supplementary list with the rank of commander, and rejoined for the war. Commander Unwin at one time was an officer in the White Star Line. Midshipman E. O. de Wet, R.N., who was awarded the D.S.C., was on board the Conway 1909, when he passed into Osborne R.N. College. At present there are some 300 ex-Conways serving afloat and ashore.

Deceased, who was educated at Ipswich - Middle School, Needham Market Grammar School, and at Brussels, spent two years in a broker’s office in London, and was a partner with his father in the firm of C. Mason and Son.

OBITUARY THE NAVY. Lieutenant John G. Nicolas D.S.C . who was drowned on service, entered the Royal Navy in 1910. and became Lieutenant in March, 1915. He was commended for service in action during the operations in Gallipoli, April, 1915 to January, 1916, when he was in command of the Chelmer, and was twice wounded the landing operations of Aug. 6 and 7,1915. He refused to give up his duty of directing gunfire until no longer able to stand. For his services he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

In 1993, to mark the 75th anniversary of the tragedy, the people of South Ronaldsay created a memorial at Windwick.
It reads: In memory of the 188 men who perished here when HMS Narborough and HMS Opal were lost on the rocks of Hesta during the snowstorm of 12 Jan. 1918.
