HMS Gaillardia, an Aubrietia-class sloop, was built in 1916/17 by the Blyth Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. Ltd., Blyth being launched on the 19th May 1917.
The Loss
In 1918 a plan was put forward by the United States Navy to blockade the North Sea by laying a mine-field that stretched from Orkney to Norway and was hoped to prevent German U Boats from passing North Scotland. This mine field was known as the ''Northern Barrage''. The mine field was started in June 1918. By the end of the operation 70,263 mines had been laid, 56,611 by the US Navy and 13,652 by the Royal Navy.
The Northern Barrage is known to have accounted for at least two U Boats, U 92 & U 102 ,and possibly six other U Boats which had gone missing, and research has not yet proven where they were lost.

Test Site
Prior to the start of the Northern Barrage, in March 1918, a test field was laid to the east of Orkney. This site was further south of the area where the main barrage would be laid.
The ships that laid this test site were the converted liners HMS Paris and HMS Princess Margaret.

Positions of the mine lines in the test field
On the 22nd March 1918 HMS Princess Margaret laid a mine line between 58 56 N 01 29W and 58 55N 02 03W.
HMS Princess Margaret signalled HMS Gaillardia, ''I am afraid there are two or three floaters. Go along line and help 'Musketeer' to find and sink them. The last mine I laid was a floater.''
HMS Gaillardia sank three floaters, none of these detonated. At 11.40, while HMS Musketeer and HMS Gaillardia were steaming in line ahead, on bearing N 72 W, there was a tremendous explosion about 6 cables off HMS Gaillardia's starboard beam due to no apparent cause.
HMS Musketeer signalled ''What do you think of that explosion?'' HMS Gaillardia responded that it would be reported when back in harbour. It seems 6 mines detonated simultaneously, throwing up a large wall of water.
At 11.45 the last of the four floaters was sunk by gun fire.
At 11.55 HMS Gaillardia appears to have struck a mine and sinks.
The position of sinking, given by HMS Musketeer was 58° 57 1/2N 1° 48W. (see chart below)
Lieut. Macdonald described the sinking as follows :- (Taken from ADM 116/1616)
He was standing at the standard compass when the first explosion (apparently port side forward) occurred.
He was thrown back to the rear of the bridge; then another explosion occurred (about one or two seconds after the first).
This threw him into the air; he landed on his back on the upper deck a few seconds before the ship sank.
The last explosion seemed to be a double one.
In a letter to the enquiry, from HMS Musketeer dated 23/3/1918 it was stated that the mines were very sensitive and that several mines exploded shortly after being laid. It was thought HMS Gaillardia did not actually strike the mines but they detonated due to the wash caused by the ship passing over them.

In 2008 a wreck was located by Netsurvey in position 58°55,753'N 01°49,485'W. The wreck is described as being 72.7m in length, 16m wide with a height of 4.m. Lies 055°/235° with bows ? to NE. On its side. Limited detail was obtained on the MBES due to depth. The chart was amended to Wk 88mtrs in revised position.

SS Viken
Another charted wreck which is along the mine line is SS Viken (Possibly). This wreck has the UKHO Wreck card 1409.
The SS Viken was a Swedish steamship of 1825 grt on a voyage from Freeport to Göteborg with a cargo of sulphur.
The dimensions of SS Viken were 79.9m x 13.1m x 5.5m
SS Viken was sunk on May 17th, 1917 by the German U Boat UC-31 (Otto von Schrader).

Both SS Bancrest and SS Tiberton have been dived by the dive group Dark Star and from descriptions of style of vessel and cargo were identified.
SS Tore Jarl
The wreck with the ID SS Tore Jarl has been surveyed and does not meet the dimensions of HMS Gaillardia with the Multi Beam showing a wreck 50m long.

Another Faversham man whose death is reported is 1st Class Petty Officer William Robert Brett, R.N., who lost his life in an explosion while serving on a minesweeper. He belonged to Chatham Port Division, was 38 years of age, and leaves a wife and little daughter, residing at 12, Albany Road, Gillingham, where he made his home only two years ago. A native of Faversham, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy, and at the time of his death had served 20 years and four months as man's time. For a number of years be had been on surveying service. He was esteemed for his fine disposition and manly character, and possessed the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.

He was 30 year of age and a man of fine physique . It will be remembered that Mr. and Mrs. Brett lost their son, Richard B. Brett, of The Buffs who killed in action on July 17th last, at the age of 26 years, while their third son James Albert Brett. of the R.F.A. (formerly a member of the Sandwich Territorials, and employed at the tanyard), was wounded Nov 17th, but is now serving again with his unit in the firing line,

CHIEF STOKER G. S. JARVIS. Chief Stoker George Stephen Jarvis, whose death through an explosion on a minesweeper on March 22nd was recorded in our obituary column last week. was the son of Mrs Hampshire, of Vicarage Street, Faversham. He was 39 years of age and had been 22 years in the Navy, He leaves a wife and daughter who are now living at Mitcham, but who formerly had their home in Plantation Road, Faversham. This is the second loss that has befallen Mrs Hampshire through mishap at sea in the space of a few months, her son-in-law, Walter Griffin, being one those who lost their lives in the foundering of H.M.S. Racoon a little while back. Mrs Hampshire has one other son (William) in the Navy. and also two soldier sons, viz, John in the Buffs, and Charles In the Army Service Corps.

TILNEY ALL SAINTS. Killed.--Official notification has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kelton that their son. Seaman Victor Frank Kelton, No. 04278. was killed as the result of an explosion on 22nd March. The gallant lad, who was 20 years of age, was their only son, and joined the navy on 28th December, 1917, having previously been a Sea Scout since the outbreak of the war. On the 24th September, 1914, whilst serving as a Patrol Leader at Cley, he gallantly rescued a child from drowning, at the risk of his own life, and was awarded the Silver Cross of the Boy Scouts, and presented with a watch by the practitioners, of Cley. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kelton of Tilney All Saints desire to return thanks for inquiries and letters of sympathy in their end bereavement. Lynn News & County Press - Saturday 06 April 1918 A TILNEY LAD'S SACRIFICE Mr Frank Kelton, of Tilney All Saints, has received an official note that his son, Ord. Seaman J/64278 Victor Frank Kelton, has lost his life as the result of an explosion while on naval service on March 22. He was born at Tilney in 1898, and he was successively a member of the "Hope of Marshland" juvenile lodge and of the "Archangel" lodge of Oddfellows. He was one of the 1st Terrington Troop of Boy Scouts, and on the outbreak of war assisted with military guard work. He removed to the North Norfolk Coast as a Sea Scout in 1916 and while there he bravely rescued a drowning girl, as the result of which he was publicly presented with the silver star (the highest award of the Scouts), a parchment signed by the Chief Scout, and an engraved watch. |

McGrady having been drowned on June 30, 1917. Their sister, Miss Mary McGrady, resides at 55, Grove Street, Belfast. They were sons of John and Ann Jane McGrady, of Belfast.

Petty Officer Pendlebury, whose wife lives at 13, St. Peter's-place, had only been married a few weeks. He had been in the Navy six years, and had been through all the naval actions in the North Sea. He was educated at Silver-street School, and was formerly employed by Messrs. J. Crosfield and Sons, Ltd. He was 23 years of age. One of his brothers, First-class Stoker James Pendlebury, who had also been in the Navy six years went down with H.M.S. Monmouth when she sank after a gallant fight off the coast of South America.

Phelps, of Knole View, Bayham Road, Sevenoaks, whose second son, Assistant Paymaster Thomas S Phelps, R.N.R. was killed by an explosion on H.M.S. Gaillardia on the 22nd inst. The deceased officer, who was 24 years of age, was an old Sevenoaks School boy. Receiving his preliminary training at Worcester he sailed round the world as a cadet in the Port Jackson. He was in the armoured liner Otway when that vessel was torpedoed. On Wednesday morning Mr. and Mrs Phelps received news from the Chaplain that their third son, Second Lieut. Guy Phelps, Queen's West Surreys, was wounded: on the same day in France. He enlisted as a private at the beginning of the war in the Royal West Kents, and subsequently want to India and Mesopotamia, whence he returned to England to take up his commission.

Actg. Com. J. S. Schäfer, R.N., who was killed at sea on Mar. 22, aged 36, was the elder and only surviving son of Professor Sir Edward Schäfer, F.R.S., of Edinburgh University, and of Lady Schäfer. He became a naval cadet in July, 1895, and subsequently was placed on the retired list. For some time he was naval assistant in the Hydrographic Department at the Admiralty. His brother, Lt. T. S. H. Schäfer, Northumberland Fus., was killed on Sept. 26, 1915.
