On 16 October 1917, Strongbow joined a westbound convoy of 12 merchant ships from Norway. The escort consisted of the destroyers HMS Mary Rose, HMS Strongbow and two naval trawlers. On the morning of 17th October, the convoy was attacked by two German light cruisers, SMS Bremse and SMS Brummer, about 70 nautical miles east of Lerwick.
HMS Mary Rose was ahead of the convoy and on hearing gunfire turned to investigate. Lieutenant-Commander Fox had no idea what was attacking the convoy but when closing and realizing the situation did not break off but continued to charge at the two German cruisers and took a number of hits.
HMS Mary rose received a direct hit to the engine room but despite being unable to manoeuvre still continued to fire her one remaining gun. Lieutenant-Commander Fox, seeing the situation was hopeless ordered the ship to be scuttled and ordered the crew to abandon ship.

THE LAST FIGHT OF H.M. TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER MARY ROSE:-- H.M.S. Mary Rose left a Norwegian port in charge of a west-bound convoy of merchant ships on afternoon of 16th October. At dawn on the 17th flashes of gunfire were sighted astern. The captain of the Mary Rose, Lieut.-Commander Charles Fox, who was on the bridge at the time. remarked that he supposed it was a submarine shelling the convoy, and promptly turned his ship to investigate; all hands were called to action stations. Mary Rose had increased to full speed, and in a time three light cruisers were sighted coming towards them at high speed out of the morning mist; Mary Rose promptly challenged and received no reply, fired with every gun the would bear at a range of about four miles. The German light cruisers appeared to have been nonphased by this determined single handed onslaught, as they did not return the fire until the range had closed to three miles. They then opened fire, and the Mary Rose held gallantly on through a barrage of bursting shells, only a mile separated her front the enemy. Up to point the German marksmanship was poor, but as the British destroyer turned to bring her torpedo tubes to bear, a salvo struck her, bursting in the engine room and leaving her disabled; a log on the water.
All guns, with the exception of the after one, were out of action, and their crews killed or wounded; but the after gun continued in action under the directions of the sub lieutenant, as long as the gun would bear. The captain came down from the wrecked bridge and passed aft encouraging and cheering his deafened men. He stopped beside the wrecked remains of the midship gun and shouted to the survivors of its crew: "God bless my heart, lads, get her going again, we're not done yet." „ The enemy were now pouring a concentrated fire into the motionless vessel. One of the boilers, struck by a shell, exploded and through the inferno of escaping steam, smoke, and the vapour of bursting shell came the familiar, cheery voice ” We're not done yet'' As the German light cruiser, sped past two able seamen (Able Seaman French and Able Seaman Bailey), who alone survived among the torpedo tube crews, on their own initiative laid and fired the remaining torpedo. Able Seaman French was killed immediately and Able Seaman Bailey badly wounded.
Realising that the enemy had passed ahead, and that thin 4-inch gun could no longer be brought to bear on them, the captain went below and set about destroying his cyphers.
The First Lieutenant (Lieut. Basin) seeing one of the light cruisers returning towards them. called the gunner (Mr. Handcock), and bade him sink the ship. The captain then came on deck, and gave the order. "Abandon ship." All the boats had been shattered by shell fire, at their davits, but the survivors launched a Carley raft and got clear of the ship. The German light cruiser detailed to administer the coup-de-grace and then approached to within 300 yards, and poured succession of salvoes into the already riddled hull. The Mary Rose sank at 7 15 am., with colours flying, The captain, first lieutenant, and gunner were lost with the ship, but the handful of survivors, in charge of Sub.lieut. J. R. D. Freeman, R.N., on the Carley raft, fell in some hours later, with a lifeboat belonging to one of the ships of the convoy.
Sailing and rowing. they made the Norwegian coast some 48 hours later, and were tended with the utmost kindness by the Norwegian authorities. All survivors unite in testifying to the cheerful courage of the senior surviving officer. Sub-Lieutenant Freeman, throughout the last phase of this ordeal. Able Seaman Bailey, who, despite severe shrapnel wounds in the leg, persisted in taking his turn at the oar, is also specially mentioned for an invincible light-heartedness throughout.
Unhappily, there is no record what was in the mind of the captain of the Mary Rose when he made that single-handed dash in the fate of such preposterous odds. The convoy which was his charge lay ahead of him, and as he apparently supposed, was being attacked by the gunfire of hostile submarine. When, on rushing to the rescue, he realised that it was to meet not a submarine. but three of Germany's newest and fastest light cruisers, it is conceivable that the original intention of rescue was not supplanted in mind by considerations of higher strategy. He held on unflinchingly. and he died, leaving to the annals of his service an episode not less glorious than that in which Sir Richard Grenville perished.

The court-martial in the case of H.M S. Strongbow was delayed in the hope that the commanding officer would sufficiently recovered from his wounds to attend. As, however, was still unable to attend, the court-martial had now been held, and the proceedings had just reached the Admiralty. Until they had been considered did not think that it would be right to make any further statement seeing that the two separate courts were intimately connected and that the evidence of the commanding officer H.M.S. Strongbow had not yet been taken. When the proceedings had been considered by the Board in conjunction with the court-martial in the case of H.M.S. Mary Rose it would be seen whether any further statement could be made. Meanwhile the First Lord of the Admiralty wished him to amplify his statement the 1st November about the circumstances in which the Mary Rose (the late Lieutenant-Commander C. L. Fox in command) was sunk. The conduct of her officers and crew were in accordance with the highest traditions of the service, and they fought a very gallant action.

Other ships lost in the action were: SS Margrethe (Denmark) no loss of life. SS Stella (Denmark) no loss of life. SS Dagbjørg (Norway) 1 crewman lost. SS Habil (Norway) no loss of life. SS Silja (Norway) 3 crew killed. SS Sørhaug (Norway) 1 crewman lost. SS Kristine (Norway) 11 crewmen lost, SS Visbur (Sweden) No loss of life. SS H. Wicander (Sweden) 19 crewmen lost.
SMS Brummer and SMS Bremse were both scuttled in Scapa Flow, Orkney on 21st June 1919. The SMS Brummer is still a popular dive site but SMS Bremse was salvaged in 1929 and broken up for scrap at Lyness, Orkney.

THE NAVY.
Engineer Lieutenant-Commander W. H. Cleghorn, who has been killed in action, was the eldest son of Mr. John and Mrs. Margaret Cleghorn, of Clifton, Alyth. He entered the Royal Navy in July, 1902, and became Engineer Lieutenant-Commander in August, 1913.

THE NAVY.
Engineer Lieutenant-Commander W. H. Cleghorn, who has been killed in action, was the eldest son of Mr. John and Mrs. Margaret Cleghorn, of Clifton, Alyth. He entered the Royal Navy in July, 1902, and became Engineer Lieutenant-Commander in August, 1913.

He served in China and the East Indies, and for two years since outbreak of the war had served in the North Sea. He leaves a wife and two children, who reside at Southsea

KIRKCALDY SEAMAN LOST ON THE ''MARY ROSE.”
Amongst the crew of H.M.S. Mary ROSE, one of the British destroyers which was sunk with all hands in an unequal fight with German raiders on 17th October, was Leading Seaman Frederick Healds, 10 Coal Wynd, Kirkcaldy. His wife received official intimation on Saturday evening that he is believed to have been drowned. Leading Seaman Healds had seen 15 years’ service in the Royal Navy, taking part in the Cretan operations of 1896-7, and was serving during Russo-Japanese War. He was a postman in his native town, Kirkcaldy, when he was recalled as a reservist on 2nd August. 1914, and had been on active service throughout the war, taking part in the .Jutland Battle. He leaves a widow and three children, for whom general sympathy is expressed. (photo)

THE WAR.
THE LATE MIDSHIPMAN A. D. MOIR, R.N.
Great regret was expressed in the community last weekend when it became known that Mr and Mrs J. W. Moir, Dunmar, Alloa, had been notified by the Admiralty that their second son, Midshipman Archibald Douglas Moir, R.N., had been killed in action. Midshipman Moir, who was seventeen years of age, was educated at Banstead Hall, Surrey, where like his elder brother, he had a distinguished career. He afterwards entered Osborne and Dartmouth, and passed out of the latter at the top of the list, and seemed marked out for high honours in the profession he had selected. After leaving Dartmouth he was appointed to H.M.S. Marlborough; but was on temporary duty on the destroyer, Mary Rose, when that vessel put up her gallant fight against great odds in the recent engagement in the North Sea, which resulted in the loss of the vessel with nearly all her officers and men. Midshipman Moir was a bright and promising lad, and the sympathy of the community will go out to Mr and Mrs Moir and the other relatives in their great loss.
